1988 – Notorious homophobic legislation takes effect
Section 28 of the Local Government Act forbade local councils from ‘intentionally promoting homosexuality’ and from teaching ‘the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretend family relationship’. Controversial at the time, the legislation has a pernicious effect in education which is still felt today, however the campaign against it also united the LGBT communities and led to increased activism.
