First house opens despite problems with press
1986 – Space for eight residents
The first house opened in Islington, with six of the residents aged under 19. Seven of the residents had left their parental homes because their sexuality was unacceptable to their families; one woman was fleeing violence from co-sharers. One local newspaper refused to accept advertising for a new worker at Stonewall Housing, describing the organisation as ‘undesirable advertisers’.
